don't ask
too many questions
you don't need
to know exactly how
it works, by whim or breath
or time, just let yourself
be taken to wherever
it will happen, find
a shady spot
to park yourself
and wait

Did you ever wake up and find yourself in a strange place? Not geographically, but more cosmically? Because somehow I feel like a stranger in my own life right now. The past year and a half have been quite a ride. But things also keep happening that feel like a little nod from the universe. A wink from Ms. Fate.

Last night, for instance, we met some people and just started chatting about things...she's a high school art teacher, so there were all kinds of conversational connections to be made. She said really she just wants to design book covers, which I agreed would possibly be the best job in the world, chasing that perfect melding of words and images, the world's biggest ideas reduced into perfect bite-sized pieces. I think we could be friends.

Then she asked where our house is...what street we live on...and we said Chicory, and she paused for a moment. Then she said, "I LOVE Chicory! What a great street...wait a minute...Did you buy our daughter's house?!" And then I realized that the junk mail we get sometimes has the same last name that she introduced herself with, so I said "wow...YES."

She couldn't stop talking about how much she loves this house. It's her favorite house in the world. And she said she has always felt it's an artist's house, and therefore it was perfect that I should live here. Which is exactly how I feel about it every morning when I wake up...I don't know exactly how I landed here, but it fits. Yes, it's short on space. And full of problems, and quirks, large spiders, and appliances and systems ready to die at any moment, but I just love it.

"It's a bizarre but wonderful feeling, to arrive dead center of a target you didn't even know you were aiming for." -- Lois McMaster Bujold

So even though my life feels like a giant question mark right now in just about every way, I'm somehow in exactly the right spot. And thankful to be here. I just wish I knew where the ride will take me next.

But then I guess I should quit worrying about that and just go there.
